Description

As a footman in Lavant, West Sussex, John Pinnock joined the Royal Navy December 1914 as the Great War took hold. He saw service in the Dardanelles (H.M.S. Vengeance) and East Africa (HMS Hyacinth) amongst other postings. This is a superb and comprehensive bundle of a mounted medal group as worn, 2 framed items, book, miniatures and ribbon bar plus boxed WW2 medal pair.

Large framed and glazed “Crossing the Line” certificate. This is what set this certificate apart from many that are seen are the fact that it is signed but Albert and Elizabeth, Duke and Duchess of York – who we know as King George VI and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. This very special print of the Royal Cruise is titled H.M.S. RENOWN – AUSTRALASIAN CRUISE 1927 and it is by none other than the distinguished Maritime artist William Lionel Wyllie.

Small framed portrait of Pinnock in uniform. In the book, which is included in this lot – THE SKY WAS ALWAYS BLUE by Admiral Sir William James, Pinnock has a very favourable mention on page 207 where he is described in warm terms as a “true friend and great support” and whom the King and Queen always greeted as an old friend.

A note attached to the rear of the portrait states that he served with numerous Admirals listing Admiral Jacky Fisher, Admiral Jellicoe, Admiral Sir WiIlliam James, Admiral Sir Charles Little, Admiral Brand and The Earl of Cork.

John Pinnock was born 1893 in Westhampnett, Chichester, West Sussex and baptised at Lavant, West Sussex in 1894. He died 1970 at Portsmouth, Hampshire.
