William Fred Manaton, 23, steward of a ship, for on July 2 saving Alice Francis, 10, in Newhaven Harbour. Francis fell from the paddle-box of the steamer Plymouth Belle into the water, some 28ft. Manston, seeing the accident, plunged in fully clothed, and by diving brought her out from under the paddle-box and supported her until the ship’s boat picked them up.

William Frederick Manaton was born in Great Torrington, North Devon. He served in the Royal Navy from 1897 through to service in the Great War.
