1914/15 Star named to PTE. R. O. WALDECK. HARTIGAN’S HORSE
Hartigan’s Horse was raised in an extremely short period of 2 weeks by the Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Easter Division of the Cape Province. As a serving member and officer in the South African Police he gained authorisation from the Minister of Defence of the Union of South Africa. The purpose was to raise a unit to serve in the German South West African campaign.
The rapid raising of the unit was put down to the high calibre of applicants and the fact that they predominantly came from experienced Police and Military veterans.
The unit reportedly served with distinction.
