Anglo Boer War Queen’s South Africa Medal with Natal clasp to – 50935 BOMB, Frederick HIGGENS. 2 Company (Western Division) Royal Garrison Artillery.

Frederick Higgens was a 20 year old Warehouse Clerk from Sutton Valence, Maidstone, Kent when he attested into the Royal Artillery in October 1885. He served 21 years during which time he was court martialled for drunkenness and reduced to the ranks. He was discharged, living in Maidstone, Kent, in 1907. He had seen service in Gibraltar, Malta, South Africa and Bermuda as well as periods of home service. His papers confirm this single Natal clasp Queen’s South Africa medal.

He married Fanie Elizabeth Goodsell of Tenterden, Kent in October 90. She gave birth to their son Frederick Dixon Higgens 4th August 1904 – she died two months later, in Bermuda, on the 29th October 1904.1
