Isandhlwana Casualty South Africa General Service medal with 1879 clasp to Private Walter Nicholas 1/24th Foot who was killed at the Battle of Isandhlwana, 22nd January 1879.

Medal: South Africa General Service medal with 1879 clasp correctly named to: 648 PTE. W. NICHOLAS. 1/24TH FOOT. 

648 Private Walter Nicholas, aged 18 years, attested at Newport, South Wales to serve with 25th Brigade Depot on the 4th October 1875. He transferred to 2nd Battalion, 24th Foot at Dover on 6th January 1876.He was several times noted as being in “the cells” over the next couple of years. He then transferred to the 1st Battalion on the 13th June 1877 in King William Town. Musters for April to September 1878 confirm him serving in the Cape of Good Hope, thus receiving the 1879 clasp to his medal. Private Walter Nicholas was killed in action at the battle of Isandlwana on the 22nd January 1879.
